There are two ways to register as Engineer in Uganda: - Direct Applicants (DA) and Applicants through Joint Assessment Committee (JAC).

(A.)Direct Applicant:

  • The first thing you will need to do is pick the prescribed form, ERB Form ERA 1 accompanied by the prescribed fee from the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) the form must be submitted in triplicate.

The procedure to application is as follows:

  1. Carefully read and attach the following documents.
    • Up to date a Career Report
    • Attach photocopies of academic certificates.
    • Attach copies of Technical Report.
    • Completed and signed application form ERB from ERA1
  2. Attach the proof of payment for registration fees.
  3. The application form will contain information the applicant will need to present and then return all the documents to The Registrar, Engineers registration Board. and be ready to attend a Board interview.
  4. The Joint assessment committee will review all the submitted document (UIPE/ERB) that is Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) and Engineers Registration Board.
  5. If the Applicant Meets the board’s requirements the registrar shall issue a certificate of registration within a period of 14 days and also published the names of Applicant in the Gazette, indicating , the name, address and qualifications of the registered engineer.
  6. The Board may require an applicant to appear before it for the purposes of considering his/her application and shall require every applicant to produce documentary evidence of his/her work or employment immediately prior to his/her entering Uganda.
  7. If the subject to the directions of the board is different this may cause not to publish the applicant name and my lead to, or deletion from, the register.

B) Applicants through Joint Assessment Committee (JAC).

  • All candidates who are admitted to 'Member' of UIPE under the registration process will on application to the Board for registration be waived from the requirements of submitting a Technical Report and attending a Board Interview.
  • They will only apply for registration by filling ERB Form ERA 1, and attaching a Career Report and copies of certificates for the Board's processing of the documentation. The rest of procedures are the same as indicated above.

  • Details of date and Place of Birth
  • General Education (give details with dates)
  • Engineering Education (state Degree, Diploma or Licence of University or school of engineering) Documentary evidence is required.
  • Practical Engineering Training (State dates and engineer under whom applicant trained with.
  • Engineering capacity in which the Applicant was engaged
  • Period for which temporary registration is required
  • Give details of citizenship and passport held

EligibilityEdit

To Register as an engineer, all applicants:

  • Must be 25 years old or older,
  • Possess good moral character; and
  • Educational requirements
  • Applicant Must be a holder of a degree, diploma or Licence of a university or school of engineering which may be recognized for the time being by the board as furnishing a sufficient guarantee of an adequate academic training in engineering;
  • has had at least two years’ adequate postgraduate practical training as an engineer and has had at least two years’ experience in a position involving responsibility as an engineer; but the board may, at its discretion, accept any additional period in a position of responsibility as an engineer in excess of two years in substitution for the two years’ practical training; and
  • is a member of the institution.

  • Fees Charge Ugshs. 425,000

(At the time of submission the applicant should present evidence of payment of shillings Four Hundred and Twenty Five Thousand) (425,000)

ValidityEdit

  • The Board registers an applicant for temporary registration for a period of one year or for the duration of any specific work or works of engagement.
  • In case of the latter, registration ceases on termination of the work or works.

InstructionsEdit

  • An applicant for registration may be required to satisfy the Engineers Registration Board that his engineering and general conduct have been such as to make him/her a fit and proper person to be registered under the Engineers Registration Act.

The attributes of a Registered Engineer include the following:

  • Sound understanding of engineering principles;
  • Ability to integrate existing technology and off the shelf research results into engineering practice;
  • Ability to be innovative in applying scientific knowledge to solve complex engineering problem

Required InformationEdit

  • Information on Membership of Engineering Institutions.
  • Registration Number
  • Information on projects or Nature of works and duration time.
  • The report should include, where applicable, design calculations relating to one or more of the candidates own submitted drawings, certified by the supervising engineer
  • Relevant working drawings,certified by the supervising engineer,should be part of the report
  • The report must include bills of quantities
  • In writing the report therefore, the candidate should bear in mind that the onus is on him/her to give sufficient information to guide the Board in a fair and just assessment of his application. But, the report should be between 2,500 and 6,000 words

  • The provision for Temporary Registration is for a person who is not ordinarily resident in Uganda but intends to be in Uganda in the capacity of a professionally qualified engineer only for the express purpose of carrying out specific work or works for which he/she has been engage.
  • A person applying for temporary registration is required to demonstrate that he is, or immediately prior to entering Uganda was, in practice as engineer in such a capacity as to satisfy the Board of his fitness to serve the public as a professionally qualified engineer.
