Uganda - Obtain Recreational Fishing Licence (Permit)

ProcedureEdit

  1. An application for a recreational fishing permit under this Act is required to make it in a writing to the Commissioner for fisheries in such form and manner as may be prescribed by the chief Fisheries officer and shall contain the following:
    • contain the particulars and description of the recreation fishing in respect of which the application is made;
    • state in sufficient details-
      • the method to be employed in recreation fishing; and
      • the area within which it is proposed that the recreation fishing is to be operated;
    • be accompanied by such fee as the Commissioner may prescribe.
  2. The Commissioner for fisheries may, before considering an application require the applicant-
    • to satisfy him
      • that the recreation fishing is properly planned, designed and equipped.
      • that the form and construction of the fishing nets, fishing gear and other equipment intended for use in recreation fishing are adequate for the purpose of the fishing operation;
    • to supply such other information as he may require to enable him to reach a decision on the application.
  3. Issuance and validity of licence
    • The Commissioner shall issue to a successful applicant a licence for the recreation fishing subject to such conditions as he may deem necessary.
    • A licence issued under this Act shall be valid for one year and expire on 31 December every year.
    • Where the recreation fishing is to be operated in a body of water shared by two or more States, the owner or operator of the Vessel shall not be required to obtain more than one licence in a particular year.
    • The holder of a licence under this Act shall, not later than one month before its expiration, apply to the Commissioner for a licence to take effect from the expiry of the current licence.
    • The owner or operator of a recreation fishing vessel shall exhibit the registration number of the Vessel on both sides of the Vessel in bold letters with a prefix reflecting the State of registration.
    • A person who fails to exhibit a registration number on his Vessel is required under subsection (1) of the law,commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of 5000 Currency points or imprisonment for a term of three months or to both such fine and imprisonment.
  • The Chief Fisheries Officer or an authorized licensing officer shall publish a list of all licenses and permits issued under these Rules in each year, including the names and addresses of all licensees.

Applicant to be eligible should be engaging in recreation fishing activities in order to be issued with recreation fishing permit.

  • Application Fees: 10,000 Ugshs.
  • License Fee: 150,000 Ugshs
  • Renewal fees 150,000 Ugshs

A licence or permit issued under these Rules is valid only for the activity for which it is issued.

  • The Ministry of Agriculture animal industry and Forestry is responsible for drafting laws on fishing and hunting.
  • All fishers must pay the annual fishing management fee to the directorate of fisheries. In return, they will receive a fishing licence.

A person shall not engage in recreational fishing without a recreational fishing permit issued by the Chief Fisheries Officer or an authorized licensing officer.

  • Recreational fishing in Uganda in most cases requires a licence. Some species of fish and crayfish are protected at certain periods. The spawning grounds, habitats and migratory routes of important species of fish are protected for set periods to preserve fish stocks.
  • Fishing is also restricted in areas where the fish species are less populated.
  • A recreational fishing licence allows access to special fishing areas which are actively developed and maintained. This procedure provides you information on how you can apply for one.
