ProcedureEdit

  • The fish transporter is required to have a license for trucks carrying over ten tonnes. This is issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal industry and Fisheries

Trucks Carrying Fish Licence:

  1. Complete an application form.
  2. Submit the completed form together with your valid identification and photograph.
  3. Pay the application fee.
  4. Collect your Licence within 28 working days.

Register Your Vessel

  1. Go to the Directorate of Fisheries Head Office or to any of the Fisheries sub-Offices at the District wide to pick up an application form.
  2. Complete the form and submit together with other required documents.
  3. All boats must be inspected before registration. The Directorate of Fisheries will have an authorized Fisheries personnel to examine the vessel. Vessels will be checked especially on their safety and communication equipment, as well as the suitability of the vessel for rigging (that is setting up to use lines, nets, etc.) for the intended methodology which will be used for fishing.
  4. The following will be checked on the vessel before a registration number is issued.
    • Hull and superstructure
    • Propulsion system (motor, pair of oars)
    • Anchor
    • Transistor radio
    • First aid kit
    • Life jackets for all crew members
    • Waterproof flashlights
    • Distress handheld flares (3 day and 3 night flares. Pistol type not recommended.)
    • Marine compass, GPS)
    • Emergency supplies
  5. A registration number issued by the Directorate of Fisheries will be painted on the vessel at specific areas mandated by Law. The boats will also be photographed for reference purposes.
  6. Issuance of Certificate: After passing inspection, within five (5) working days a Certificate of Registration and a Licence will be issued. Failed inspections will require that a new inspection date be scheduled with the applicant. The applicant will then be advised as to the necessary changes and repairs that must be done to the vessel.

A Licence issued under this ordinance is valid for one year and expire on 31 December every year.

Need for the DocumentEdit

Purpose of this document is to Regulate the distribution pattern of fish and fish products for international, regional and local markets and to promote traceability capacity by the issuing authority.

Information which might helpEdit

  1. A person is required to obtain a valid fishing license prior to fishing in inland waters or transporting fish taken from inland waters.
  2. A person is required to keep his/her fishing license with him/her at all times while fishing or transporting fish and must exhibit their license for inspection by any warden, department employee, guide or landowner upon request.
  3. No person in Uganda is allowed to export or import a live fish or any other aquatic animal without the permission of the Minister.
  4. A person who contravenes a provision of Fish Act Cap 197 Subsection (1) of the fishing Act commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine or imprisonment for a term of five years or to both such fine and imprisonment and, in addition, the fish or aquatic animal shall be forfeited to the Ugandan Government.
  5. Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection (1) of the Fishing Act the Minister has the power, from time to time, export or imports a specialized species of fish or other aquatic animal for the purpose of exchange of fishery information or for research.
  6. The Sea Fisheries Act provide Regulations, made under section 13 of Fisheries act which state that every vessel intended for fishing to be registered with the Ministry of Fisheries Development and require vessels first to be licensed before they are transferred. They also require Specific requirements are set out for fishing vessels engaged in shrimp trawling.
