Uganda - Obtain Export Licence (permit) for Animal Hides and Skin

Apply In-Person:
- Visit the nearest District livestock Production office (DlP) for consultation then make a written request for your application with the hides and skins Department personnel at the Ministry of Agriculture, industries and fisheries.
- You will be issued with an application form, fill it out accurately, attach the requirements and submit them for verification and processing.
- On a schedule date by District Agriculture personnel(DAP) an inspector will then be sent to the site to assess, if the plot is large enough for an industrial sites and issue a report.
- If the plot size is of suitable industrial size and all the facility requirement are available i.e. water source, shed, drainage system, a quarantine area and you will be issued with the Licence upon payment of the application fees
Note:
The public health office will be involved in cases where there are no plots/areas designated for industrial sites

Renewal Fee: 50,000 Ugshs
ValidityEdit
Licenses expires on the 31st December each year and it is renewable only on condition that one complies with the hides and skins export Act.

A license may then be granted under the following conditions:
- Availability of water;
- Availability of a drainage system;
- A shed/shelter where the hides/skins will be preserved and kept; and
- A quarantine area (only for an exporters license)
- No person shall export any hide or skin unless he or she is in possession of a valid exporters-buyers license in the prescribed form issued to him or her by the licensing officer.
- An exporters-buyers license shall not be transferable by the licensee to any other person.

Need for the DocumentEdit
- Purpose of this permit is to regulate the hides and skins export.
- All business or individual’s dealing with large scales of animals Hides and Skins should be licensed, as stipulated by the Hides and Skins Trade Act Cap 89 of Uganda.
Information which might helpEdit
- The Ugandan hides produce heavy quality leathers and are generally of high grades used for shoe uppers with some hides suitable for furniture leather when processed.
- Preservation of the hides is through suspension drying (10%); and wet-salting (90%) while for skins, sun drying (70%) is the major method of preservation.
- Hides and skins are by far the highest export earner from the livestock industry and are the only products from Ugandan livestock which have been able to break into the world-wide export market.
- Uganda currently exports close to 90% of its hides and skins unprocessed.
- Fish Skin, Crocodile Skin, and Ostrich Skins are also available on the Ugandan market but on small quantities and are mainly for local use.
