Apply In-Person:

  1. To transfer ownership of a copyright, the applicant has to visit the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.
  2. Address and contact details can be found in the following Contact link
  3. Visit the office and obtain an Application for transfer of Copyright ownership from the relevant department.
  4. Complete the application form with required details and information in the respective fields under respective sections.
  5. Make sure that all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page, are available while visiting the office.
  6. After completing the form, the required documents should be attached with the form and submitted to the relevant staff.
  7. The applicant has to pay 65 dollars for the process through credit card (VISA, MasterCard or American Express) or postal money order or cheque payable in Canadian dollars to the Receiver General for Canada.
  8. After submission, the office will process the application and verify the submitted information.
  9. Within a month, once the certificate is ready, the applicant will be informed to collect it through any of the applicable means.


Apply online:

  1. To apply for transferring ownership of a Copyright online, the applicant has to visit the following Apply online
  2. Visit the link, scroll down to the bottom and click “grant of interest application form” link. In the next page, two secure login provider links will be available.
  3. Using GC Key
    • If the applicant wishes to proceed using GC Key, they should click “GCKey” button and sign in page will be opened.
    • Enter the user details in the respective fields, then click “Sign In” button, if the applicant already has an account.
    • If not, click the “Sign Up” button to create an account. Click “I accept” button and type an appropriate username in the next tab.
    • Click “Continue” button and create a password for the account in the next tab, then click “Continue” button.
    • Create Recovery Questions, Answers and Hints in the next page and click “Continue” button. Click “I agree” button in the next page.
    • In the next page, there will be two options to help verify the applicant’s identity. Select an applicable option.
  4. Using bank account/sign-in partner
    • If the applicant wishes to proceed using Sign-in partner, they should click “Sign-In Partner” button and sign in page will be opened.
    • List of financial Sign-In Partners will be displayed in the link, select one among them in which the applicant have subscribed online banking.
    • Respective online banking portal will be opened, login into it using the user credentials.
    • After logging in, there will be two options to help verify the applicant’s identity. Select an applicable option.
  5. Once the applicant has signed in with GC Key and verified his/her identity, the applicant will be directed to create the profile.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions and complete the profile creation. Proceed to sign in using the Username and Password.
  7. After profile creation, get into the portal and locate an applicable option to apply for transferring copyright ownership.
  8. Follow the onscreen instructions and complete the application with required details.
  9. Also, the applicant has to pay 65 dollars for the process by following the on screen instructions.
  10. After submission, the office will process the application and verify the submitted information.
  11. Within a month, once the certificate is ready, the applicant will be informed to collect it through any of the applicable means.


Apply through mail:

  1. To apply for transferring ownership of a Copyright through mail, the applicant has to send a mail application to the mailing address of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.
  2. Mailing Address can be found in the following Contact link
  3. The applicant has to prepare a letter for requesting to transfer ownership of a Copyright, with required details and information.
  4. Make sure that all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page, are available.
  5. Then, the required documents should be attached with the letter and sent to the following mailing address: Canadian Intellectual Property Office, Place du Portage I, 50, Victoria Street, room C-114, Gatineau, QC K1A 0C9.
  6. The applicant has to pay 65 dollars for the process through credit card (VISA, MasterCard or American Express) or postal money order or cheque payable in Canadian dollars to the Receiver General for Canada.
  7. After submission, the office will process the application and verify the submitted information.
  8. Within a month, once the certificate is ready, the applicant will be informed to collect it through any of the applicable means.


Apply through fax:

  1. To apply for transferring ownership of a Copyright through fax, the applicant has to send an application to the fax number of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.

  3. The applicant has to prepare a letter for requesting to transfer ownership of a Copyright, with required details and information.
  4. Make sure that all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page, are available.
  5. Then, the required documents should be attached with the letter and sent to any of the following fax numbers: 819-953-2476 (black and white), 819-953-6742 (black and white), 819-934-3833 (color).
  6. The applicant has to pay 65 dollars for the process through credit card (VISA, MasterCard or American Express) or postal money order or cheque payable in Canadian dollars to the Receiver General for Canada.

  • The office will keep a record of the documentation and return the originals, if applicable, with a certificate of registration.
  • To link the Industry Canada username to the online deposit account, the applicant must contact the Finance, Integrated Planning and Administration Branch by email or by phone at 819-994-2269.
