Apply In-Person:
- To submit Assignment or License of Copyright in person, the applicant has to visit the office of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.
- The address and contact details of the office can be found in the following contact link
- The applicant has to visit the office and inform the relevant official that he/she needs to submit Assignment or License of Copyright.
- While visiting the office to apply, the applicant must have all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- The official in-charge will direct the applicant on how to complete the application process.
- The application process is online and the applicant has to complete it with the assistance of the official in-charge.
- The official can also complete the online application on behalf of the applicant. In that case, the applicant must provide all the information that the official seeks.
- The applicant will have to pay an application of about 65 dollars for the assignment or license of the copyright.

- After that, assessment of the application and submitted information by the respective officials will take place.
- Once all the required processes are over, the applicant will be sent a Certificate of Registration through any applicable means.
Apply Online
- To submit Assignment or License of Copyright online, the applicant has to visit the following apply online link
- Click “Update your account” option to update or change any information in an already created account.
- Or, click “Create an account” option and correspondingly “Create an account” button to create a new account.
- Enter the email address in the next step and click “Next” button. Complete the next step with address and click “Done” button.
- An account will be created and a confirmation email would have been sent to the provided email address. Click the link available in the email and click “Confirm and continue” button.
- Then click “Back to the application” link and click “Register” button in the next page. Click “file a grant of interest” button.
- Online registration form will be opened further; the applicant has to complete it by following the onscreen instructions.
- Provide all the required information in relevant fields, upload the required attachments, pay the application fees and submit the application by clicking the applicable button.
- After submitting, assessment of the application and submitted information by the respective officials will take place.
- Once all the required processes are over, the applicant will be sent a Certificate of Registration through any applicable means.
Apply through fax or mail
- To submit Assignment or License of Copyright through fax or mail, the applicant has to send an application to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office’s fax number or mail address.
- The address and contact details of the office can be found in the following contact link
- The applicant has to first prepare a cover letter as a request to submit Assignment or License of Copyright.
- Then, a copy of the original agreement between the parties and the proper fees required for the application process should be attached with the cover letter.
- These documents and the required fees should be sent to the CIPO’s mailing address through a trustworthy mail service, as per the applicant’s convenience.
- The mailing address is as follows: Canadian Intellectual Property Office, Place du Portage I, 50, Victoria Street, Room C-114, Gatineau, QC K1A 0C9.
- The application can also be made through the CIPO’s Facsimile number which can be found below: 819-953-2476 (black and white), 819-953-6742 (black and white), 819-934-3833 (colour).
- After the, assessment of the submitted information by the respective officials will take place.
- Once all the required processes are over, the applicant will be sent a Certificate of Registration through any applicable means.

EligibilityEdit
- Any owner of a copyright can apply when he/she wishes to transfer some of or all of his/her rights to another party.
- Any owner of a copyright can apply when he/she wishes to give permission to another party for using the work under certain conditions.
FeesEdit
- It costs 65 dollars for registration of an assignment or licence of a copyright.
- If the application and fee are not submitted online through the Copyright Office, via the Canadian Intellectual Property Office web site, an additional fee of $15 is required.

- The applicants are advised to complete the application form with absolute legibility and appropriate information to make it easier for the officials during processing of the application.
- Also, attach the required documents in full to avoid delays in processing of the application request.
- Any questions or comments regarding the changes to the grant of interest application form, should be directed to the CIPO.
