IMPORT/EXPORT PERMIT
- Note: In-person applications are not entertained.
Apply through mail
- To obtain permit or license for Trade in Protected Species through mail, the applicant has to send a mail application to the mailing address of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) office.
- First, the applicant has to download the respective application form from the following Application forms
- Download the applicable application form and complete it with appropriate details in the respective fields.
- Once the application has been filled out completely, the applicant should attach the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page, with the completed application form.
- Then, send the application form and other documents to the mailing address mentioned in the application form, through a safe and secure mail service.
- If the mailing address is not found in the application form, it can be found here CITES Permitting Office, Canadian Wildlife Service, Environment Canada, 351, St. Joseph Blvd Gatineau, Quebec K1A 0H3.
- Fees details can be obtained by contacting the CITES office. They may ask the applicant to send the fees along with the application form.
- Upon receipt of the application package and appropriate fees, the Office will start assessing the application and attached documents.
- On completion of the assessment and verification, the applicant will be issued with the import/export permit as required by the applicant.
- The application processing will be completed within 40 to 80 business days.

- Any person in Alberta, who wants to export or import protected species from or to the city of Alberta, can apply.

- Please obtain the fees details from the office.
ValidityEdit
- CITES permit is usually valid up to six months for export purposes and twelve months for import purposes.

- An important step in preparing to enter or exit Canada is to check if the trader will be transporting anything that is, contains, or is made from a CITES-protected species.
- A checklist is available for every species that requires a CITES permit. Use the scientific name of the species in the keyword search on the CITES list to find out whether the item requires a permit.
- The results will be more precise when using the scientific name of the species. A quick internet search will give the scientific name.
- The applicants should send the applications to the responsible provincial or territorial departments where they are located (export only).
- If their province or territory is not listed, the request for a species that is not from those provinces or this is for import, they should submit their application to CITES Canada.

Need for the DocumentEdit
- Before exporting or importing any protected species listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the trader must obtain a relevant permit which will be required to be presented at the port of exit and port of entry.
- Under the Convention, export/import of protected species will not be permitted without a relevant permit.
