Receiving of the CertificateEdit

Documents are mailed to the address of the person who is making the application. It is advisable to contact a Registry Agent or Registry Connect for special arrangements and/or rush services options.

EligibilityEdit

  • A party to the marriage (bride/groom)
  • A guardian, trustee or person with power of attorney for a person described in the first eligibility. A copy of the legal document must be attached to the application.
  • A person who is a designated agent for a person described in the first or second eligibility. Consent and the statutory declaration on the application must be completed.
  • A person who is designated by a personal directive as an agent of the person described in a). A copy of the legal document must be attached to the application.
  • A person with an order from the court. A copy of the order must be attached to the application.
  • f) A lawyer for a person described in the first, second, fourth or fifth eligibility. A copy of a valid Law Society card must be attached to the application.

When the person who was a party to the marriage is deceased:

  • An adult next-of-kin* of a person who was a part to the marriage. Death certificate and either proof of relationship or an Affidavit of Relationship must be attached to the application.
  • The executor of an estate of a party to the marriage. Death certificate and a copy of the will identifying the executor must be attached to the application.
  • An adult relative of a deceased party to the marriage when there are no eligible applicants. Death certificate and either proof of relationship or an Affidavit of Relationship must be attached to this application.

Anyone may apply for a marriage document when:

  • The marriage record is 75 years or older.

In addition to the government certificate fee, registry agents are authorized to charge a service fee.

Processing TimeEdit

Once a registry agent submits a request or the Vital Statistics office receives an application, it is usually processed within two to three business days provided there is no additional information required.

InstructionsEdit

  • The appropriate form must be completed and submitted through the authorized registry agent network in Alberta.
  • Kind of marriage documents are available to order:
    • Certified small size Certificate of Marriage (bride/groom)
    • Certified small size Certificate of Marriage (name/name)
    • Certified large size Certificate of Marriage (bride/groom)
    • Certified large size Certificate of Marriage (name/name)
    • Photocopy of a Registration of Marriage
  • This is a copy of the registration completed at the time of the marriage, signed by the marriage officiant, the couple and their witnesses. This document contains pertinent information about the details of the marriage and provides the birthplace of both parties to the marriage. It is printed on 8 1/2 x 11 inches with an official raised seal and red stamp on the back stating it is a certified true copy of the original registration.

Need for the DocumentEdit

Alberta Vital Statistics maintains a record of all registered marriages that occur in Alberta and can only issue certificates or documents for those particular events. Marriage certificates are issued using the information from the original Registration of Marriage, completed at the time of marriage. If a record cannot be found, a record search can be completed for a consecutive three-year period.
