Apply In-Person (Free tax clinic):

  1. To file Personal Income Tax at a Free tax clinic, the applicant has to visit the free tax clinic nearest to their location.
  2. The applicant can find a Free tax clinic with the help of the finder in the following Location finder
  3. Find a clinic as applicable and visit the clinic. Enquire the volunteer in the clinic on how to file the Personal Income Tax.
  4. The applicant may have to complete an application form which may be provided by the volunteer.
  5. The applicant has to complete the form as instructed by the volunteer and with the required details.
  6. After that, the applicant should attach the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page, with the completed form.
  7. Then, the application package should be submitted to the Free tax clinic volunteer. The process is free and the applicant need not pay anything.
  8. After submission, the free tax volunteer will assess the submitted information and proceed to file the income tax.
  9. Within two weeks, the applicant’s Personal Income Tax will be filed with the Canada Revenue Agency.


Apply In-Person (Discounter/tax preparer):

  1. To file Personal Income Tax at a Discounter/tax preparer, the applicant has to visit a Discounter/tax preparer as per their choice.
  2. The applicant can seek help from the Canada Revenue Agency to find a Discounter/tax preparer Contact link
  3. Find a Discounter as applicable and visit them. Enquire the Discounter in the clinic on how to file the Personal Income Tax.
  4. The applicant may have to complete an application form which may be provided by the Discounter.
  5. The applicant has to complete the form as instructed by the Discounter and with required details.
  6. After that, the applicant should attach the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page, with the completed form.
  7. Then, the application package should be submitted to the Discounter. He/she will inform the applicant about the fees to be paid for filing the tax.
  8. After submission, the Discounter will assess the submitted information and proceed to file the income tax.
  9. Within a while, the applicant’s Personal Income Tax will be filed with the Canada Revenue Agency and the discounted refund is paid by the tax preparer right away.


Apply through tax software (electronic filing):

  1. To file Personal Income Tax through tax software, the applicant has to use any of the tax software applications certified by Canada Revenue Agency and file the Personal Income Tax Electronic filing
  2. Visit the link and the applicant can find the links of all the certified tax software applications, from which they have to select a link that is applicable.
  3. There are also packages through which the applicant can file their Personal Income tax with their mobile itself.
  4. Make a selection as applicable and proceed by following onscreen instructions. Download the software by clicking the applicable buttons and launch it in the device.
  5. Then, locate the applicable option to file the Personal Income Tax. The applicant may have to create an account in the respective online platform.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions, provide the required details and complete the application process. Upload the required documents (if any).
  7. The software/electronic platform will prompt the applicant to pay the fees amount as applicable (if any). The applicant has to pay that by following the onscreen instructions.
  8. The process may also be free with respect to the applying platform. Once done, submit the form by clicking the applicable button.
  9. After submission, the CRA officials will assess the submitted information and proceed to file the income tax.
  10. Within two weeks, the applicant’s Personal Income Tax will be filed once the assessment is over.


Apply using Paper tax return feature:

  1. To file Personal Income Tax using Paper tax return, the applicant has to visit the following Paper tax return
  2. Visit the link and there will be two options such as “Online” and “By mail”. Online links for all the provinces will be available under the “Online” section.
  3. If the applicant wishes to continue with the Online option, they should click the applicable province option from that.
  4. The applicant can use the form download links on the next page to download the form and file the Personal Income Tax.
  5. If the applicant wishes to go with the “By mail” option, they should click an applicable option under that section. In this case, the applicant will have to order an application package by following the onscreen instructions on the next page.
  6. In both cases, the applicant will have to complete the filings on paper and return it to the applicable mailing address.

  8. The process is free and the applicant need not pay anything. After submission, the CRA officials will assess the submitted information and proceed to file the income tax.
  9. Within 10-12 weeks, the applicant’s Personal Income Tax will be filed once the assessment is over.
