Alaska - How to Obtain a Learner's or Instruction permit

- Go to a DMV Office.
- Completed the Permit Application Form(Form 478).
- Provide required documents.
- Pass a written test.
- Pass a vision test.
- Pay the fee.

- Valid Identity card
- Age proof
- Residential proof
- Social Security Card
- Legal name & date of birth (primary document)
The following documents are acceptable for proving legal name and date of birth. If your legal name is different than what is printed on your birth certificate, you will need to bring in the document(s) that provide proof of the name change, unless you have previously obtained an Alaska learner's permit or Alaska State ID card in your current name.
- An original or certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate (From Vital Statistics)

- Passport (Issued by the United States or Canada. Must be current.)
- An Alaska learner's permit or Alaska State Identification card.
- Military Identification for active duty, retiree or reservist.
- Certificate of Citizenship, Naturalization or Birth Abroad.
- Passport issued from another country, with appropriate immigration documents.
- Name Change
The document provided must be an original or certified copy of the original issued by a government agency.
- U.S. Passport (Must be current)
- Amended birth certificate
- Certified adoption papers, marriage certificate, court order or divorce decree
- Certificate of Dissolution, Divorce or Annulment
- Certificate of Naturalization
- Certificate of Name Change
- Social Security Card
- Original Social Security Card ( Metal and laminated cards are not acceptable).
- Letter from the Social Security Administration verifying your name and number.
- Letter from the Social Security Administration verifying you have never been assigned a social security number.

- Residence Address
The following items are acceptable for proving residency. The document must show your residence address, not a post office box or other mail cache facility.
- Utility bill
- Alaska voter registration card
- Alaska title and/or registration (Issued at least 30 days prior to application)
- Paycheck Stub
- Medical Assistance card
- Public Assistance card
- Cancelled check or bank statement
- Mortgage or rental documents

Please be aware that the Alaska DMV does not accept non-personalized checks. Your name and address must be pre-printed on any check to be acceptable.

A permit issued to an applicant that is 19 or 20 years old will expire 90 days after the applicant's 21st birthday. [AS 28.15.099] All other permits are valid for two years from the date of issue.

InstructionsEdit
- An applicant for a learner's or instruction permit must be at least 14 years of age.
- If the applicant is under 18 years of age, they must have parental consent to obtain an original, duplicate or to renew a permit.
- Effective July 1, 2007 - A permit can be renewed ONE TIME, ONLY.
- The applicant will be required to pass the written knowledge test, a vision test and pay a fee prior to being issued a learner's or instruction permit.
- A permit issued to an applicant that is 19 or 20 years old will expire 90 days after the applicant's 21st birthday. [AS 28.15.099] All other permits are valid for two years from the date of issue.
- If a driver has a learner's permit from another state, they must obtain an Alaska learner's permit before driving in Alaska.
- The applicant must pass an alcohol and drug awareness knowledge test to renew their permit or to upgrade from a permit to a license. [AS 28.15.085]
- In order to drive with a permit, you must be accompanied by a person age 21 years or older that has a minimum of 1 year driving experience.
- This person must have a valid driver license and occupy the passenger seat next to you at all times.
- If you have been issued an Alaska State ID and your name has not changed since the ID was issued, the following does not apply to you.
- Once you have been issued a driver license for a specific class of vehicle, you would no longer be eligible to obtain a permit for that specific class of vehicle.
