Alaska - Apply for Motor Cycle License
ProcedureEdit
- Once you have held your learner's permit for at least six months and have practiced driving with someone 21 or older, you may apply for your Alaska driver's license at nearest driving license office.
- Pass the written knowledge test (or present a valid Alaska learner's permit or driver license).
- Pass the written motorcycle knowledge test* (or present a valid motorcycle instruction permit).
- Take the Vision test.
- Pay the applicable fees.
- Pass the Motorcycle road test.
Required DocumentsEdit
- Legal name & date of birth (primary document)
The following documents are acceptable for proving legal name and date of birth. If your legal name is different than what is printed on your birth certificate, you will need to bring in the document(s) that provide proof of the name change, unless you have previously obtained an Alaska learner's permit or Alaska State ID card in your current name.
- An original or certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate (From Vital Statistics)

- Passport (Issued by the United States or Canada. Must be current.)
- An Alaska learner's permit or Alaska State Identification card.
- Military Identification for active duty, retiree or reservist.
- Certificate of Citizenship, Naturalization or Birth Abroad.
- Passport issued from another country, with appropriate immigration documents.
- Social Security Card
- Original Social Security Card ( Metal and laminated cards are not acceptable).
- Letter from the Social Security Administration verifying your name and number.
- Letter from the Social Security Administration verifying you have never been assigned a social security number.

- Residence Address
The following items are acceptable for proving residency. The document must show your residence address, not a post office box or other mail cache facility.
- Utility bill
- Alaska voter registration card
- Alaska title and/or registration (Issued at least 30 days prior to application)
- Paycheck Stub
- Medical Assistance card
- Public Assistance card
- Cancelled check or bank statement
- Mortgage or rental documents

- MOTORCYCLE (M1) LICENSE
An applicant for an original motorcycle license (see below for motor-driven cycle) must be:
- at least 16 years of age
- and must have held an instruction permit for a minimum of 6 months, if under the age of 18.
- If an applicant is under 18 years of age, they must have parental consent to obtain the license.
- MOTOR-DRIVEN CYCLE (M2) PERMIT
An applicant for an original motor-driven cycle permit must be:
- 14 or 15 years of age
- and must have parental consent to obtain the permit.

Note: Please be aware that the Alaska DMV does not accept non-personalized checks. Your name and address must be pre-printed on any check to be acceptable.
ValidityEdit
A driver license issued to an applicant under the age of 21 will expire 90 days after the applicant's 21st birthday. All other Alaska driver license's expire on the applicants birthday and are valid for approximately five years.

Motor-driven cycle: A motor cycle, motor scooter, motorized bicycle or similar conveyance with 50 cc or less of displacement.
- Helmet Requirements
- Any operator under 18
- Any passenger on a motorcycle, regardless of age
- Anyone with an instruction permit, regardless of age
- Anyone taking a road test for their motorcycle license, regardless of age
- MOTORCYCLE (M1) LICENSE
- An applicant will be required to pass the following tests prior to being issued a motorcycle license. The license fee is valid for approximately five years. The license expires on your date of birth.
- Written knowledge test (or present a valid Alaska learner's permit or driver license)
- Written motorcycle knowledge test^ (or present a valid motorcycle instruction permit)

- Motorcycle road test^ (Motorcycle must have greater than 50 cc displacement.)
^In lieu of the written motorcycle test and the motorcycle road test, an applicant may present a card issued from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation showing they have passed one of the Motorcycle Rider Courses listed below. The course must have been successfully completed within the current or previous calendar year. Courses completed in other states will be accepted as well as those in Alaska; however, you must go to a DMV in person in order to obtain the motorcycle license.

- It is necessary to have active Auto Insurance in order to drive legally in Alaska.
- Your Alaska driver's license will generally expire on your birthday. The expiration year will generally be five years from the year the license was issued or last renewed.
- It is advisable to renew your driver's license before the birthday on which it will expire. You can renew your license any time in the three months leading up to its expiration.
- You will have to take a vision test and you may be asked to take other tests.
