Procedure

Apply In-Person

1. To renew a passport, visit the nearest passport office or service Canada centre offering passport services. Use the following link to find the nearest passport office.
2. Fill in the application form with relevant details, download the application form by clicking on the link under the “Documents to use” section of this page.
3. Or use the following link to download the Application form.
4. Gather all the necessary documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
5. The applicant will need to find references (The reference must have known the applicant for two years). For further information on referees, click on the link under the “Information which might help” section of this page.
6. Visit the nearest centre along with the application form and supporting documents.
7. The applicant will have to pay a fee. Find more information under the “Fees” section of this page.
8. Submit the application along with supporting documents to the respective authority.
9. Once fee payment has been made. The applicant will receive a receipt which will indicate the day the applicant will have to visit the centre to pick up their passport.
10. The applicant shall receive their renewed passport within 10-20 days from the submission of the application.

Apply by Mail

1. To apply for a passport renewal by mail, the applicant will need to fill in the application form.
2. Here is the application form.
3. Gather all the necessary documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
4. The applicant will need to find references (The reference must have known the applicant for two years). For further information on referees, click on the link under the “Information which might help” section of this page.
5. Attach original copies of documents to the completed application form.
6. The applicant will have to pay fees, this can be done by filling in the card details in the “Fees” section of the application form.
7. Attach original copies of all documents to the application form and mail them to the address mentioned under the “Office location and contacts” section of this page.
8. The applicant will receive their passport the same way they mailed the application form.
9. The passport and original documents will arrive in separate packages.

• Identification documents (This should include name, sex, DOB, photo and signature):
  • Military ID
  • Drivers License
  • Canadian passport
  • Foreign passport
  • ID cards (Issued by the federal/provincial governments)
• Two identical passport photos.
• Application form.

Eligibility

• The applicant must be a citizen of Canada.
• The applicant was at least 16 years of age at the time of their last application.
• The Canadian passport that is being renewed is valid for a year.
• The Canadian passport is expired for more than a year.
• The passport was never lost or stolen.
• The passport is not damaged.
• The applicant’s current passport should not be damaged.
• The current passport should not be reported as lost or stolen.

• The applicant will have to pay a fee.

Validity

• The passport needs to be renewed every 5 to 10 years.
