Receiving of the CertificateEdit

Documents are mailed to the address of the person who is making the application. It is advisable to contact a Registry Agent or Registry Connect for special arrangements and/or rush services options.

EligibilityEdit

  • The person whose birth is registered.
  • The parent of the person whose birth is registered as established by the Registration of Birth or by court order. A copy of the applicable court order must be attached to the application.
  • A person adopting a child. Proof of a pending adoption must be attached to this application, e.g. petition of adoption.
  • A guardian, trustee or person with power of attorney for a person described in the first or second eligibility. A copy of the legal document must be attached to the application.
  • A person who is designated by a personal directive as an agent of the person described in the first eligibility. Acceptable legal document as proof must be attached to the application.
  • A person who is a designated agent for a person described in the first to fifth eligibility. Consent and the statutory declaration on the application form must be completed.
  • A person with an order from the court. A copy of the order must be attached to the application.
  • A lawyer for a person described in the first to fifth or seventh eligibility. A copy of a valid Law Society card must be attached to the application.
  • A person who requires it to comply with another legislation. A copy of the legislation must be attached to the application.

When the person whose birth is registered is a minor:

  • If the minor is younger than 12 years of age, the application must be made on behalf of the child by a parent or guardian of the minor.
  • Between the ages of 12 and 14 the minor may make the application with the written consent of the minors parent or guardian.
  • Over the age of 14, the minor may make the application on his or her own behalf.

When the person whose birth is registered is deceased:

  • An adult next-of-kin* of the person whose birth is registered, including a minor parent. Death certificate and either proof of relationship or an Affidavit of Relationship must be attached to the application.
  • The executor of the deceased persons estate. Death certificate and a copy of the will identifying the executor must be attached to the application.
  • An adult relative of the deceased person when there are no eligible applicants. Death certificate and either proof of Relationship or an Affidavit of Relationship must be attached to the application.

Anyone may apply for a birth document when:

  • The birth record is 120 years old or older; or
  • 50 years has passed since the death of the person whose birth is registered.

Processing TimeEdit

Once a registry agent submits a request or the Vital Statistics office receives an application, it is usually processed within two to three business days provided there is no additional information required.

InstructionsEdit

  • Individuals born in Alberta who want a new birth certificate may apply for one through a registry agent. The fee for a birth certificate is $20 plus a Registry Agents fee. Turnaround time for certificates is typically one to two days and is subject to standard mail delivery times via Canada Post.
  • Alberta Vital Statistics maintains a record of all registered births that occur in Alberta and can only issue certificates or documents for those particular events. Birth certificates are issued using the information from the original Registration of Birth, completed at the time of birth. If a record cannot be found, a record search can be completed for a consecutive three-year period.

The Alberta birth certificate:

  • Has more than 20 embedded security features (including third wall security features that cannot be communicated for security reasons)
  • Confirms Canadian citizenship
  • Is made of a durable polymer material
  • Provides greater security for citizens (protection against identity theft, fraud, tampering)
  • Will help with validation when traveling to destinations where valid travel documents include a drivers license and birth certificate
