ProcedureEdit

  1. Complete an application form. Link to download the form is provided under the 'Documents to Use' section.
  2. The application fee is $200.00. The background check processing fee is $60.00. All applicants for the Initial certificate must include payment in the form of a cashiers check, money order, credit card or debit card (Visa, Discover or MasterCard.) Fees are non-refundable. Personal checks are not accepted.
    If you will be paying using a credit or debit card, complete all information under the 'Fees' section of the application form, including the name on the card and the cardholders signature. Cashiers checks or money orders can be made payable to the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development (EED).
  3. Mail the completed application and supporting documents to the Teacher Certification Office (address provided below). Note: If you would like your original documents submitted with this application to be returned, you must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your application packet.

Required DocumentsEdit

Include all of the items required for the certificate for which you are applying in a single application packet. Make sure that everything is in there to avoid your application being returned unprocessed. Note: Photocopied/faxed applications are not accepted.

  • Completed application form
  • Official transcripts verifying a Bachelors Degree or Higher, from a regionally accredited institution
  • Official Transcripts verifying the completion of 3 semester hours of approved Alaska Studies and 3 semester hours of approved Alaska Multicultural coursework
  • Official Transcripts verifying the completion of 6 semester hours or 9 quarter hours of credit from a regionally accredited institution in the five years prior to the date of application
  • Approved Basic Competency Exam (BCE) Passing Scores & Evidence of Content Exam (Praxis II) attempt
  • Fingerprint Card -OR- Employment Verification -OR- Previous clearance
  • Application Fees
  • Signature and Notarization
  • Teacher Education Program Offered by a Regionally Accredited Institution OR-
    Completion of a State Approved Teacher Preparation Program OR-
    Foreign Evaluation verifying the completion of a teacher preparation outside of the United States

EligibilityEdit

SECOND INITIAL (3-YEAR) CERTIFICATE:

  • Passing scores on an approved Basic Competency Exam
  • Completed state-approved teacher preparation program
  • Official transcripts showing:
    • 3 semester hours of approved Alaska studies coursework
    • 3 semester hours of approved Alaska multicultural coursework
    • 6 semester hours of coursework completed in the five years prior to date of application (recency credit)
  • Has held an Initial or Provisional teacher certificate
  • If held Reemployment, only lacking experience component: (2 years certified FTE)
  • At least one attempt to pass an approved content area exam (Praxis II) or an equivalent.
  • Not eligible for reinstatement of a Professional or Master teacher certificate.
