ProcedureEdit

  1. Complete an application form. Link to download the form is provided under the 'Documents to Use' section.
  2. The application fee is $200.00. The fingerprint processing fee is $60.00. All applicants for the Master certificate must include payment in the form of a cashiers check, money order, credit card or debit card. Fees are non-refundable. Personal checks are not accepted.
    If paying by credit or debit card, complete all information under the 'Fees' section of the application, including the name on the card and the cardholders signature. Cashiers checks or money orders can be made payable to the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development (EED).
  3. Mail the completed application and supporting documents to the Teacher Certification Office (address provided below). Note: If you would like your original documents (i.e. Out-of-State certificate, original score report) to be returned, you must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your application packet.

EligibilityEdit

FOR CURRENT HOLDERS OF A PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE:

  • SIX SEMESTER HOURS OF CREDIT WITHIN THE FIVE YEARS IMMEDIATELY PRECEEDING THE APPLICATION. Official transcripts reflecting at least 6 semester hours (or 9 quarter hours) of credit earned within the previous five years must be included with the application. CEUs will not apply toward this requirement.
  • OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS MAY BE OPENED, BUT NOT MARKED ON IN ANY WAY.
  • CURRENT NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION. Applicants will need to submit a copy of their current National Board certificate issued by NBPTS or Alaska Teacher Performance Review scores.
    You are eligible for Master certification in the content area(s) on your National Board Certificate or the Alaska Teacher Performance Review. The content endorsements and grade levels currently on your Professional certification may also be added to your Master Teacher Certificate.


FOR CURRENT HOLDERS OF AN INITIAL CERTIFICATE:

  • COMPLETION OF AN APPROVED TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAM. The preparing institution or state must sign and endorse the Institutional or State Recommendation, indicating standards. The original Institutional or State Recommendation must be included with the application or on file with Teacher Certification.
  • ALASKA STUDIES COURSEWORK. Official transcripts reflecting 3 semester hours of APPROVED Alaska Studies coursework must be included with the application.
  • MULTICULTURAL/CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATIONS COURSEWORK. Official transcripts reflecting 3 semester hours of APPROVED Multicultural/Cross-cultural Communications coursework must be included with the application.
  • SIX SEMESTER HOURS OF CREDIT WITHIN THE FIVE YEARS IMMEDIATELY PRECEEDING THE APPLICATION. Official transcripts reflecting at least 6 semester hours (or 9 quarter hours) of credit earned within the previous five years must be included with the application.
  • Examinee Score Report(s) showing passing scores on a content area exam(s).
  • TWO YEARS OF EMPLOYMENT AS A CERTIFIED TEACHER. Two (2) years of full-time, certified employment as a teacher must be evident in the Positions Held section on page 4 of the application. If the two (2) years of certified employment used to satisfy this requirement occurred in a state other than Alaska, a copy of a teacher certificate from the state where the employment occurred must be submitted with this application or on file with our office. The out-of-state certificate must have been valid during the employment period.
  • CURRENT NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION. Submit a copy of your current National Board certificate issued by NBPTS or Alaska Performance Review scores. You are eligible for Master certification in the content area(s) on your National Board Certificate and the content and grade levels you would be eligible for on a Professional certification

ValidityEdit

A Master certificate is valid for ten (10) years. To renew a Master certification, you will need to submit a copy of your renewed National Board Certification. In addition, you will need to submit required six semester hours or equivalent credits. The credit must be completed during the life of the Master certificate.

Holders who do not meet the renewal requirements for your Master certification, they will be required to meet all requirements for renewal of the Professional certificate to maintain an Alaska teaching certificate. Their National Board endorsement area will not be placed on their Professional Certificate.
