Apply In Person

  1. To Request Voluntary Withholding (SSA), the applicant has to approach the Social Security Administration link
    NOTE: Enter the ZIP Code and click the “Locate” button.
  2. The applicant has to download the application form from the following link
  3. The applicant has to enter all the details in the application form.
  4. Make sure that the applicant has to attach all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
  6. Submit all the documents with the completed form to the nearest SSA office.
  7. The applicant will need to select the percentage of the monthly benefit amount that he/she wants to withhold.
    NOTE: The applicant can have 7, 10, 12 or 22 percent of the applicant’s monthly benefit withheld for taxes.
  8. The fee for this procedure has to be paid as per the authority’s request.
  9. Once the verification process is done, the applicant gets the notification through mail.
  10. The applicant has to visit the office and with the confirmation receipt, also ask for more details about withholding begins.
  11. The processing time for this procedure is up to 15 – 30 days.

  • Unemployment compensation (including Railroad Unemployment Insurance Act (RUIA) payments).
  • Social security benefits
  • Social security equivalent Tier 1 railroad retirement benefits
  • Commodity Credit Corporation loans
  • Certain crop disaster payments under the Agricultural Act of 1949 or under Title II of the Disaster Assistance Act of 1988.
  • Dividends and other distributions from Alaska Native Corporations to its shareholders.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • The applicant may find that having federal income tax withheld from the listed payments is more convenient than making quarterly estimated tax payments. However, if the applicant has other income that isn’t subject to withholding, consider making estimated tax payments. For more details, see Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals.
  • It is not possible to pay Social Security taxes voluntarily on work that is not covered for Social Security under the terms of the Social Security Act and the Internal Revenue Code.
