• Visit AL Department of Public Safety (DPS) Offices in person to renew your State Identification Card (ID)

Required Documents

• One document that verifies your name and date of birth. This can include your certified birth certificate, passport, and naturalization or citizenship certificates.
• Social Security card.
• If the first document is not a photo ID, then you must supply one more form of identification. This can include any valid U.S. driver's license, marriage license, Veterans Administration card, Selective Service card, school identification card with photo, a W2 tax form, or divorce decree.

Eligibility

Identification cards are issued to individuals who do not physically qualify for a driver license, do not have a current driver license, or who wish to discontinue driving and surrender their license.

They are not issued to holders of a valid Alabama driver license.

Fees

The fee for each four year renewal is $23.

Instructions

• Your Alabama ID card must be renewed every four years after the date of issue.
• You must go in person to your local Drivers License Office, as there are no arrangements in place to renew ID cards by mail or on-line.
• The fee for each four year renewal is $23.

Need for the Document

Even those of us who do not ? whether by chance or by choice ? drive, need some kind of identification. These days, solid, irrefutable and valid identification is required in order to do any business, including banking, buying property, obtaining credit, writing a check, buying an airline ticket, traveling, and a host of other things. You need to renew your State Identification Card every four years after the date of issue.
