Procedure

1. Registration is done at the premises of the body of state registration of civil status acts. Spouses may request that their marriage be registered in the place where they live, where an in-hospital medical treatment is provided or in any other place if, for valid reasons, they are unable to appear in the body of state registration of civil status acts (Article 33 of the Family Code of Ukraine). They must submit documentary evidence to prove the validity of their claim.
2. Spouses must submit a written application for marriage registration according to the established form with any body of state registration of civil status acts of their choice. Applications must be submitted in person. Persons that have submitted an application for marriage registration are deemed to be engaged. In cases where spouses, for valid reasons, cannot personally file the application for marriage registration with the body of state registration of civil status acts, the application, certified by a notary, may be submitted through their representatives. Authorities of such legal representative should be based on the notarized power of attorney.
3. State registration of marriage is legalized by the issuance of the Marriage Certificate, the sample of which is approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. The entry on state registration of marriage is made to the passports or passport documents of persons, who registered their marriage, with indication of the family name, first name, patronymic and year of birth of the other spouse and place and date of such registration (item 25 of Section 2 of Chapter ??? of the Rules of state registration of civil status acts in Ukraine).
4. Re-marriage is registered with the body of state registration of civil status acts upon presenting documents confirming termination of previous marriage by persons, who have been married before (part two of Article 14 of the Law of Ukraine On State Registration of Civil Status Acts). .

Eligibility

Marriageable age in Ukraine is 17 years for the bride and 18 years for the groom (Article 22 of the Family Code of Ukraine).

Individuals who has attained the age of 14 may be allowed by the court to marry if it is found that such marriage satisfies his/her interests and upon submitting a request to the court (Article 23 of the Family Code of Ukraine)

Fees

Validity

Until the marriage is registered with a fixed date, the application for marriage registration remains valid for three months from the date of its filing (Article 28 of the Family Code of Ukraine).

Processing Time

The marriage will be registered after the expiration of a period of one month from the date where the application to be registered was submitted.

A marriage may be registered prior to the expiration of the time limit if there is an immediate need and valid reason to do so. Permission from the Head of the body of state registration of civil status acts must be obtained.

If the bride happens to be pregnant, has given birth to a child or there is an existing threat to the life of the spouses, the marriage may be registered on the exact day of application, or any other day chosen by the parties within one month (Article 32 of the Family Code of Ukraine).

Instructions

Consent to be married must be freely given by both parties. Forcing a woman and man into marriage is prohibited (Article 24 of the Family Code of Ukraine).

The presence of the spouses at the registration of their marriage is compulsory. State marriage registration through a representative is not allowed.
