Every registered nurse, nurse practitioner, or midwife shall after three (03) years apply for renewal of their general nursing practicing license, while that of private practice license is valid for one year and must be renewed by 31 March of each year, an application should be submitted at least one month before the expiration of the current license. Apply In-Person:
Step 1: Make a renewal payment
- This process should be the first step for an easier renewal procedure. Make payments of renewal fees. Please refer to the “Fees” section below for details, payment can be made either in cash or deposited to the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC) Bank Accounts, and proof of payment (Bank Payment receipt) shared with the council registrar's office.
Step 2: Make the application and obtain the License
- Applicants should visit any of our Satellite Regional offices in 13 Regional Referral Hospitals in Uganda. These are; Arua, Lira, Soroti, Mbarara, Hoima, Fort Portal Moroto Mbale, Jinja, Mubende, and Kabale Regional Referral Hospitals are operational for now the remaining Regional Referral Hospitals will be operational before the end of 2015.
- Licensees are required to present their professional IDs and or Original professional Certificates and the evidence of their CPDs to be validated by the Register office before being issued with the renewal practice form.
- Carefully complete the forms with appropriate information under relevant sections then attest the forms with your signature once completed, attach all the supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section below, before submitting the complete dossier for verification and processing.
- After the successful screening of the submitted documents, Where the registry office is satisfied that the applicant has complied with all the requirements as may be applicable; and has continued demonstrating a capacity to meet the obligations and compliance requirements as stipulated by the Council, it shall, within thirty days of receiving the complete application, approve the application.
- The applicant will be notified to collect his/her Practicing license via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification and surrender the expired license before being issued the renewed license.
- The General Nursing practicing license shall be valid for three (03) years, while for private nursing practice, the license is valid for one year and renewal thereafter.
Apply Online
- Licensed Nursing/Midwives can renew their practice license through the council's online portal; UNMC Website, Once on the homepage click on the “Online System” option.
- The applicant will be redirected to the UNMC sign-in page, log in if already registered; if not yet registered click on the “Sign Up” tab, this will redirect the User to the “Create User Account” Page; fill out all mandatory fields before clicking on the “Sign Up” tab.
- A user Verification code will be sent to the registered Uganda mobile number, input the code then click on the “Verification Code” tab.
- This will redirect the user to the Council online portal page, please follow the prompts and complete all mandatory fields for registration as a professional registered Health Practitioner (Nurse/midwifery) with the Council.
- Then proceed with the practice nursing renewal process, and make an online payment for the renewal online using a debit or credit card before submitting the application for assessment.
- The license is usually ready after a period of 30 days. Notification for collection will be made through email and text messages. One is required to collect the license in person from the council offices. One is required to carry proof of identity during collection.
- The General Nursing practicing license shall be valid for three (03) years, while for private nursing practice, the license is valid for one year and renewal thereafter.

- Two (2) recent identical colored passport photographs with white backgrounds.
- Expired license.
- Identity Card
- Photocopies of certificates of registration.
- Continuing Professional Development Logbook.
- Original evidence of Payment of all applicable fees.
- Any other additional supporting documentation as requested by the Authority.

EligibilityEdit
- The individual should be registered with the Council and a holder of a practicing license.
- To be of good reputation and commendable conduct.
- To have never been sentenced in a felony or misdemeanor (for a custodial penalty in a crime involving moral turpitude or breach of trust, unless rehabilitated in either case). In short, not to have a criminal record.
FeesEdit
The following fees are applicable:
- The Renewal fee for All Registered levels (Diploma, Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D.) is 80,000/=
- The Renewal fee for All Enrolled levels (CCN, EN, EMHN, CM) is 50,000/=
- The renewal fee for Non-Ugandans/Ugandans outside Uganda at all levels (cadres) is USD 50
- A late payment charge of 50% on each year of default.
