Apply In-Person

  1. The first thing you should do to obtain a license to operate a private museum is to ensure that all facilities of a private museum meet Ugandan standards as prescribed by Uganda Tourism Board.You can visit their website on the following link Uganda Tourism Board
  2. The second thing you should do is to send a written application to Uganda Tourism Board showing that you have facilities which qualifies to be used as a museum within the meaning of the law. You should also provide evidence of the same.
  3. The third thing is to Confirm that you already have in your possession a substantial collection of items for exhibition.
  4. That the applicant is able to provide professional and authoritative expertise and advice in relation to the proposed activities of the museum to the public;
  5. The applicant on addition to expertise should ensure that he/she has a tenure building in which the proposed museum is to be located.
  6. The application should as well indicate the proposed name and qualification of the proposed curator for the Museum.
  7. The applicant must show by proof the source of funding,cost and the proposed bankers.
  8. The Authority shall discuss with the applicant,sign a contract before the private museum is permitted to operate.
  9. Pay relevant fees, depending on the requirements from officers from Uganda Revenue Authority and attach a copy of the pay slip from the Bank on the application.
  10. Submit the application along with all required documents, to Uganda Tourism Board a duly completed and signed by the applicant.
  11. Once approved by the Uganda Tourism Board,the Legal officer of the Board shall issue License to operate a private museum to the applicant.

An application for a license is considered in regard to;

  1. the legal status of the applicant, including, in the case of a corporate person;
  2. whether the items collected and exhibited in the proposed museum shall be alive or non-live;
  3. whether the materials are secured in the long-term for the public benefit;
  4. whether the applicant has formal arrangements to manage and exhibit the collection; and
  5. whether the materials in the collection were acquired following the appropriate law.
  6. The applicant should demonstrate access to full time professional conservation advice for the maintenance of the museum.
  7. The applicant should provide evidence that the museum has taken adequate steps to ensure the safety and security of the collection.

  • A private museum is a privately owned museum other than a national museum, which is open to the public

Information which might helpEdit

  • The applicant should have in his employment a professional curator for purposes of managing the museum.
  • A curator should have the following qualifications
  1. a relevant degree from a recognized university or specialized knowledge of the subjects covered by the museum; or
  2. a diploma in museum studies from a recognized institution of learning or equivalent qualifications from an accredited institution of learning; and
  3. relevant experience of the principles and practice of museum operations and management.

The applicant may be required to demonstrate that the museum has a sound financial basis by submitting

  1. its budget;
  2. accounts for the previous two years; and
  3. supporting documents for the long-term security of the museum building, including the tenure.

Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit

  • To regulate all activities of the Private Museum
  • To protect Ugandan's National Heritage from being excavated or collected in the field by unqualified professionals.
